Third Tuesday of Advent

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD December 19, 2017 Third Tuesday of Advent WORD of the DAY  O Root of Jesse, Who stands for an ensign of the people, before Whom kings shall keep silence, and unto Whom the Gentiles shall make their supplication: come to deliver us, and tarry not. (O Antiphon for Magnificat) How shall I live this Word? Root of Jesse:  this antiphon briefly recalls the karma of the Suffering Servant of Isaiah, especially chapter 53.  It is an unjust, unexpected, inappropriate suffering but it is not an end in itself.  It is a sign of suffering and here is the key word: it is the sign of Jesus. The awaited One, whose genealogy it seems possible to trace, comes and disconcerts, because His genealogy captures the most irregular elements and builds a new meaning for His coming.  Only Isaiah had intuited it and did not fear to prophesy the Suffering Servant. In the temple, Simeon will recognize Jesus as a sign of contradiction, come to reveal the human heart to itself.
