Serve for the Love of God

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD 32nd   Tuesday of Ordinary Time November 10, 2020 WORD of the DAY  So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do’.”                          (Luke 17: 10) How shall I live this Word? A monk wrote some time ago, This profound and very human comment we report today: “The more I think about it, the more I am convinced: our society is tyrannized by the logic of utility. The motto is: ‘there is no time to waste’. And so we fill our agendas with many small or large commitments, we continually measure and verify the effectiveness of what we do, we confuse kindness with skill. We believe, ultimately, that we are loved for what we do. Today the Gospel tells us what, for me, is perhaps the sweetest word there is: ‘we are useless servants’. We are, that is, people who serve without gain, without wanting anything in return. Effectiveness at any cost gives way to the beauty of the service, which comes from discovering oneself loved.
