Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD 26th Friday of Ordinary Time St. Francis of Assisi October 4, 2019 WORD of the DAY I bless the LORD who counsels me; even at night my heart exhorts me. I keep the LORD always before me; with him at my right hand, I shall never be shaken. You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (Psalm 16) How shall I live this Word? These expressions, captured in the responsorial psalm of today’s liturgy, are well suited to the splendid figure of St. Francis. He, in fact, the son of one of the greatest wealthiest people of Assisi, was a young pleasure-seeker who could afford all that a rich person can easily have. However, when he became aware of how much pain there was and is in the world, he irrevocably decided to leave things and money in abundance to clothe himself inwardly with Jesus Himself: the Lord Christ.
