MARY VISITS ELIZABETH

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Thursday  May 31, 2018 FEAST OF THE VISITATION Week Eight of Ordinary Time  WORD of the DAY   When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,  cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.      (Luke 1: 41-43)    How shall I live this Word? Today’s Liturgy invites us to re-live the joy of Mary and Elizabeth when they meet in Ain Karim.  It is precisely through Elizabeth’s words to her cousin Mary that we can penetrate the endless riches of this event in the history of salvation.  “Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?”  Elizabeth is truly amazed that Mary, the Mother of the Lord, comes to her. Celebrating the feast of the Visitation means, above all, entering into the incomprehensibility of a God who ‘visits’ human beings because of His insuppressible desire for closeness and communion with His creatures.  The authentic attitude of a religious person is modeled on that of Elizabeth.  It is insuppressible awe, full of gratitude for an encounter that...
