The Spirit guides to truth

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

May 17, 2023   Sixth Wednesday of Easter

WORD of the DAY

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason, I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”                (John 16: 12-15)

How shall I live this Word?

In today’s Gospel, the key word should perhaps be ‘graduality’. “I still have many things to tell you, but for the moment you are not able to bear it now.” Jesus knows well that we can only understand and experience things a little at a time. We could read the whole Bible as a gradual unveiling of the Truth. God doesn’t say everything right away but not because He wants to keep us in ignorance but simply because He wants it to really penetrate us without having negative consequences. So, God slowly through Jesus began to open the window of the Truth, gradually educating us to the immense and luminous experience of His gratuitous Love. The role of the Spirit is precisely that of going through and remembering all the gradualness given by Christ and bringing it to total fulfilment. How to reconnect the threads already stretched by the announcement and testimony of Christ Himself. “He will glorify me, because He will take what is mine and announce it to you. All that the Father possesses is mine; that’s why I said that He will take mine and announce it to you.” It will then happen that the work will be completed and that what we considered an absence, we will actually see as a deeper Presence.

O Holy Spirit, come! Enlighten us, inflame us, strengthen us, and make us available to God the Creator and Father of every person.
