FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
THIRD MONDAY OF ADVENT
CHRISTMAS NOVENA BEGINS
December 16, 2019
WORD of the DAY
Where was John’s baptism from? Was it of heavenly or of human origin?” They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we fear the crowd, for they all regard John as a prophet.” (Matthew 21: 25-26)
How shall I live this Word?
Jesus teaches in the Temple. His words are spirit and life. And yet they cannot overcome that wall of shadow and suspicion erected by those around Him because their heart is not pure. “With what authority do you do this?” The question has an evil taste. They want to make Jesus fall into a trap. But the Wisdom who lives in Christ finds the suitable and destabilizing answer.
It is also a question: “Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from men? ” At this point, the high priests and the elders no longer have words. Their minds, clouded by power, are closed in front of the proclamation of salvation. They have no way out. With skillful strategy, the Teacher has thus avoided openly revealing the origin of His activity to men who refuse to recognize Him.
In today’s prayer I will remember the beatitude: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they see God” and I will ask Jesus to give me a pure heart and clean eyes to see His Word.
The voice of a Gospel Prayer
Lord Jesus, You have closed the mouth of those who refused to recognize Your authority a priori. Give us an open heart to welcome the message of the authentic prophets that today, like yesterday, Your Spirit can raise.
