DAY OF MISSIONARY MARTYRS
WORD of the DAY
By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!”. (Luke 13: 5)
How shall I live this Word?
The present moment is the point, the only point where one can and must convert.
But in short, from what should we be converted? Are we not good people?
D. Bonhoeffer suggests a thought: “The opposite of faith is not disbelief; it is idolatry”.
But what is idolatry? In common opinion, while true faith worships only one God, idolatry worships many gods. But in the Bible idolatry is something more subtle: it is not so much to bend the knee in front of a golden or wooden statuette; it is not even worshiping the golden calf; it is rather to erect one’s ego in place of God.
At the bottom of every idolatry, there is autolatry, “self-love pushed to the point of contempt for God” (St. Augustine).
From here, if conversion means literally “turning back, making a U-turn”, at the origin of conversion there is the desire to change direction: from our “I” to God. Today, now.
You Lord, are with us in this change of direction; You help us and sustain us. You are always with us. ‘I Am who am!’, You define Yourself. Help us to be with You!
THE VOICE OF Bishop Romero and ‘the Option for the Poor’
“I offer you this example. A building is on fire and you are watching it burn, standing and wondering if everyone is safe. Then someone tells you that your mother and sister are inside that building. Your attitude changes completely. You become frantic: your mother and your sister are burning and you would do anything to save them even at the cost of becoming charred. This is what it means to be truly committed, to opt for the poor, no matter how worried we may be. We should come in as if our mother and sister were burning. In fact, it is Christ who is there, hungry and suffering.”
