Third Thursday of Advent

 WORD of the DAY

But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God”.    (Luke  1: 34-35)

How shall I live this Word?

Mary is one of us.  She is disturbed at the beginning of the annunciation but the angel’s words reassure her: “Fear not!”  However, given the unusual communication, the Virgin needs to know how this promise waited for over the centuries will happen.  Contrary to the incredulous Zachariah, she does not ask how this can be possible, since God knows how to accomplish the impossible in human history.  She only wants to understand how it will happen.  God overshadows her to be able to show Himself to the eyes of Mary, to our eyes.  The Spirit becomes dark in order to adapt Himself to the possibility of our vision.

Today in silence, I will invoke the Spirit, soul of my soul, asking Him to accompany me toward the knowledge of the Lord.
