WORD of the DAY

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.  He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” (John 1: 29-31)

How shall I live this Word?

The space opened yesterday along the Jordan, today becomes actual and makes room for the principle actor, the awaited One, the Lamb of God.  John invites us to look closely, and behold, “Ecco, in Greek means look!”  The precursor, the one who comes first, does not address anyone in particular, but anyone who, like us, listens to his testimony.  He repeats this again, after having identified Him as the Paschal Lamb, and having specified for the third time that it regards someone greater than he: “I did not know Him”.  I wait for Him, but I do not know Him.  “But he can recognize Him because he is waiting for Him.  We only recognize what we love”.

Lord Jesus, I want to repeat to You the words of the Psalm that pleads, “From the aurora I seek You.  My soul thirsts for You”.

The Voice of David Maria Turoldo, Religious Poet

You, hidden in every desire, O Infinite, who weighed on the embraces.

Then I would have understood the beauty of the evening Psalms

And how much dew you spread with delicate hands,

At night in the meadows, unseen.
