JESUS IS OUR FOOD!

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

18 April 2024   EASTER THURSDAY 3

WORD of the DAY

Jesus said to the crowds: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God.
Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.”
   (John 6: 44-51)

How shall I live this Word?

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him… “. They will all be disciples of God. Jesus is also a disciple, the best; for this reason, He can be at the same time a teacher. Going to Jesus, going to the Father means knowing Them, not rationally, but in an experiential way. Faith is a vital attitude and not an assent to theoretical truths. Only those who have experienced God can understand what another says about Him.

Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died.” Jesus refers to manna to clarify the difference. Manna nourishes the body that must die. Jesus, as bread of life, nourishes the spirit that does not die.

The expression “bread of life” is not found anywhere else in the Bible; this indicates the originality of John’s doctrine. LIFE, with a capital L, is the fundamental theme of the whole Gospel of John.

“I am the living bread descended from heaven; whoever eats of this bread will live forever.” This sentence sums up all that said above. Jesus is the food of true life. This is the concise and sublime message of the community of John. God is everything for Jesus and must remain so for every Christian.

Lord Jesus, nourish me with Yourself, the bread of life.

The voice of a Japanese Poem

Sit in silence. Do not do anything. Spring comes and the grass grows by themselves.
