FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
16 April 2024 EASTER TUESDAY 3
WORD of the DAY
The crowd said to Jesus: “What
sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our
ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from
heaven to eat.” So, Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to
you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the
true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from
heaven and gives life to the world.”
So they said to Jesus, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said
to them, “I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never
thirst.” (John 6: 30-35)
How shall I live this Word?
In all the great discourses that we find in the Gospel of John, reference is made to Life, with a capital letter. It is a reality that we cannot explain with words, nor enclose in human concepts. Only through symbols and metaphors can we point the way to an experience that is the only one that will lead us to discover what we are talking about. The “I am” in John is the supreme manifestation of the awareness of what Jesus was. Each of us must discover what He really is, as Jesus discovered it.
“… whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst!” What does it mean to “go to Him, believe in Him”? Here is the heart of the discourse. It is not a matter of receiving something from Jesus, but of discovering that everything He had, I have. What Jesus means is that human beings discover that it is possible to live in a different perspective, that achieving human fulfillment means discovering what God is in each of us, and once we discover this total gift (Life), we respond as Jesus answered.
What Jesus proposes is against all rational logic. He is telling us that the bread that gives life is not the bread that is received and eaten, but the bread that is given. If we become bread like Him, then that giving will become Life. Jesus does not invite us to seek our perfection, but to develop the ability to give ourselves.
Help us, Lord, to live as You want us to live, in fullness.

If you knew who I really am, I would stop acting like what I think I am; and if I stopped acting like what I think I am, you would know who I am.
